What should I expect at the first appointment?
On the first visit please arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your scheduled massage time, in order to fill out an intake form to help me better assess your needs and issues. This allows me to be aware of the problems you are having, as well as any contraindications where massage therapy may result in adverse health consequences. Please be aware that for any follow-up visits, it is important that you inform me of any new problems or ongoing health conditions. I will require a new intake form should any new serious medical problems arise. This is also a good time to inform me of any allergies, especially ones to oils or essential oils. If you have not had a massage and you are not sure if you have allergies to oils please let me know so that a patch test can be done.
What should I do to prepare for the massage therapy session?
It is important to have your mind and body prepared for the massage session the day of the appointment. Some suggestions include:
-Be sure to drink plenty of water BEFORE and AFTER the massage session.
-Allow yourself a sufficient amount of time to get to your appointment so you can skip the frenzied feeling of being late, and go directly into a peaceful massage.
Will I feel pain or discomfort during the massage session?
You will feel some pressure on your muscles during a massage, but it should generally be a pleasant experience. If you are receiving a more extensive massage such as a deep pressure you may experience some pain, but it should not last more than a few minutes. It is important to tell me if you are feeling any kind of pain or exceptional discomfort so I can make adjustments and stay within your personal comfort zone.
How will I feel after the massage?
Because every body is unique, post-massage experiences will be different for each person. Most clients feel deeply relaxed instantly and able to feel that way for many hours after the massage. Some do experience a surge of energy. Those who are having their first massage or have not had a session for a long period of time and have very tight muscles, may feel a little of soreness in the muscles the next day. This is a normal response, just like when you go to the gym after long time of not working out. After the massage, is suggested to avoid any heavy physical work or exercise for the rest of the day.
How often should I schedule massage therapy sessions?
Regular sessions will help you take full advantage of the healing powers of this therapeutic and holistic treatment. We can discuss your experience and your body’s response to the treatments and help you determine the best schedule for regular sessions. Generally, for stress reduction or minor issues this may range from once a week to once a month. Those with higher stress levels will benefit from weekly massage treatments. If you have special medical issues and considerations, please consult with your physician and communicate with me about your goals for treatment and we can come up with a plan together.
When is massage therapy not recommended?
There are several health conditions and circumstances for which massage is not recommended. If you have a history of thrombosis or phlebitis, massage treatments may cause blood clots to break free which could result in a heart attack or stroke. Those who have had recent surgery or severe injuries need to consult with their physician before those areas of the body are manipulated in a massage session. Those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation should also check with their physician. Acute and chronic infections, fever, skin rashes, or recent heart issues are contraindicated for massage.
It is important that you work with your doctor to manage major health issues and concerns. Massage therapy may complement or even enhance conventional treatments of your health problems, but it is not intended to replace the medical supervision or health management you are receiving from a licensed physician.
It is extremely important that you keep me informed of any health problems you are experiencing and any medical treatment you are currently undergoing, including medications. If you are under a doctor’s supervision for any health issues, obtaining written recommendation and medical approval for massage or other bodywork is strongly encouraged and may be required prior to receiving massage treatments.
Specific contraindications for massage therapy include:
Please do not schedule an appointment if you are experiencing any of the following: fever, inflammatory conditions, recent operations or acute injuries, neuritis, or skin diseases. Please also do not book a session if you are under the influence alcohol or drugs (including pain medication) or in your first trimester of pregnancy.
2. Local contraindications:
A therapist cannot perform massage over any areas that are affected by the following conditions: varicose veins, undiagnosed lumps or bumps, bruising, cuts or abrasions, sunburns, undiagnosed pain and inflammation (including arthritis).
3. Medical Contraindications
Other medical conditions for which massage is not recommended include: cardiovascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension), inflammation, psoriasis or eczema, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart problems (angina, pacemakers), acute rheumatism and hemophilia.
